The project brief was to create additional sleeping accommodation and provide access onto the raised rear garden via a new balcony and terrace. Located within a conservation area, the house was one of three identical miners cottages located on the main road on the outskirts of the village.
It was important to create a design that was sympathetic to these heritage assets and offer a structure that was both disconnected and subservient to that of the main house. Using raised conveyor belt structures as a source of inspiration and materials that also reflect the area's industrial heritage the addition stands in its own right, creating a small piece of gateway architecture.
